Adler: Birth Order Assignment

Alfred Adler, one of Freud's contemporaries, focused on the effects of social interaction as the basis for the formation of the unconscious mind. As a result he became interested in the topic of birth order and the affect it has on one's personality. Read the following article from Time magazine and answer the following questions.

Click here for a word doc version.

Time: The Power of Birth Order

Response:
1) List your birth order (ex. first born, 2 of 4, baby...etc)
2) Based on your birth order what characteristics are associated with your personality?
3) How accurate do you think the research is regarding birth order? Explain?

Reveiw on theories of Emotion

To give you one more presentation of the three theories on emotion, below is a lecture from another AP psych teacher, Mrs. Rice. It is short and to the point. Also attached are my notes on this unit.

Motivation in Advertising

Our current unit on emotion and motivation presents a lot of concepts that are important to advertisers in the business world. I recently came across this diagram about colors used in marketing and the message it might send about the product.

Do you think certain colors are related to certain emotions? Do you associate these feelings with the products and brands that are presented. Are there other examples of companies you like based on the colors of their logo?

Sims Version of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

This post is more for those students who missed Tuesday's lecture on Maslow's hierarchy of needs due to the in-school performance of the musical. I have attached the notes for Motivational Theories and a quick video that gives an overview using the sims. Hope you enjoy!

Unit 9 Test Tomorrow!!!

Unit 9 Test is tomorrow. Make sure you have all of the stage theorist figured out. Don't forget how useful mneumonic devices can be. If you have some good ones feel free to share in the comment section. I will try to publish them quickly. Notes are attached and don't bank on a snow day tomorrow.

Unit 9: Development Notes

Another Kohlberg Dilemma

Hopefully you enjoyed our discussion about Joe and his father today. If so, I have another one for you. This is from a video posted on youtube. It present the famous Heinz Dilemma and is interactive. Once you come to the end of the video you make your choice and it will explain which level of moral development you are reasoning from. It's pretty cool! Check it out it and try the multiple options. It may help you better identifiy Kohlberg's stages.

Assignment: Parent Interviews

If you missed class on Thursday, then you didn't here about the Parent Interview project due Feb. 20th. This is a great opportunity to sit down with your parents and ask them all those human development questions you have been wanting know about. The project requires you to turn in your interview notes, summary and the rubric sheet. Any questions please email me.

Comics Books and Bad Science

I know some of you in class are fans of comic books and thought I would share this:

Many social psychologist have studied the effects of our media on juvenile delinquency. Today most of the research looks at violent video games and rap music. However, in the 1950's the evil medium was comic books. Psychologist,Fredric Wertham's, 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent claimed the violent imagery was harmful to young people who read them. This prompted the U.S. Congress to pressure comic book companies into establishing a self regulatory organization called the comic code. Recently there has been a review of Wertham's data from his case studies of comics. The following was originally posted over at the blog site Teaching High School Psychology:

Posted: 13 Feb 2013 11:57 AM PST
Librarians Assemble! Carol Tilley, media literacy professor at the University of Illinois, looked at the archival data from a study done by Psychiatrist Fredric Wertham, and figured out that his own data didn't support the conclusions he presented to the U.S. Senate!

This was back in the ol' days when comic books didn't have a great reputation Wertham told the Senate that comics might contribute to increases in violence, drug use, and "sexual deviancy" (as he defined it).

Enter our hero: Carol Tilley swoops in and uses her super-archivist powers to look at Wetham's original case study notes and finds that he often didn't have much if any data to support his dramatic conclusions. POW! Take that, bad science!

Psychology teachers could use this as a compelling example of the importance of responsible data use by psychologists, and that research should be re-examined and continually peer-reviewed, especially when dealing with case study and other qualitative research that might be easily misrepresented.

Look! Up in the sky! It's a lirbarian! It's a critical thinker! It's super-heroine Carol Tilley!

Unit 8 Test

Hope everyone is studying and reviewing for tomorrow's Unit 8 Test. To help I have posted the notes in case you have missed anything. Also, many of you have asked for the answer to the sample intelligence test questions I gave you, so I included them below as well.

Thinking
Language
Intelligence

Intelligence Test Answers:
1. Friday
2. a. P Y The alternate letters starting with S spell
“silver anniversar,” and this sequence completes
the phrase “silver anniversary.”
3. 25
4. ANNIVERSARY
5. MENSA
6. b
7. b
8. b
9. TOM
10. HOUSE
11. JANE
12. 9 p.m.
13. b. Both grow in the ground.
14. a. Alternate numbers go up by 2 and down by 1,
starting with 1, and 10.

19. LAND
20. c. The number of lines goes down opposite the

Respondents score one point for each correct
answer. They should add 5 points if they finished in less
than 20 minutes, and 3 points if in less than 30 minutes.
Scores range from 0 to 25. On the basis of the scores of
some Mensa members who took the test, Salny provides
the following interpretation of scores.
25 You’re an excellent Mensa candidate.
25–24 You can almost surely pass the Mensa
supervised test.
14–19 A very good candidate for Mensa.
10–13 A fair candidate.
Below 10 Everyone has an off day!

Side note:

An intelligence test does not measure drive, persistence,
creativity or any of the myriad other skills that often
count for more in achieving success out of school. A low
score on an I.Q. test does not mean probable failure in
life. All it means is that the person taking the test did
poorly on that particular test. Most of us do not spend
our lives in situations that can be measured by paperand-
pencil tests. Since this is so, scores obtained on such
tests should be viewed with some restraint if they are
high and with some skepticism if they are low. They
measure only one aspect of a total life pattern.

Unit 7 Test Memory

Hope everyone has a great weekend and will take some time to study and prepare for the unit test on Monday!!! Remember to put into use all the concepts about memory we have been learning in this unit. Especially the spacing effect for encoding of information. It will make studying a lot easier if you space out your studying of the information. You don't have to put in any more time just break it up over the weekend. Also keep in mind the use of elaborative memory tricks such as mnemonics and and acronyms. Good luck : ).

Here are the notes for this unit if you missed any thing.

Encoding
Storage
Retrieval

P.S. Once you think you know it all, study it again.

Super Memory

Today we began looking at memory storage. This was highlighted by some significant case studies of extraordinary memories. However, some of those cases of extreme memory abilities came with sever disadvantages. Such is the case with Stephen Wiltshire an autistic savant who has an unbelievable photographic memory. I have attached a link to the YouTube video if you happened to miss this. As you watch the video consider whether you believe its possible that his extraordinary memory is at all associated or a product of his autism. are

You can also find a link to his amazing gallery in London. Many of the originals (if you can afford it!) are available for purchase as well as the more affordable prints and other gifts.

Stephen Wiltshire

In addition to Stephen we also watch brief interview with Mary Lou Henner. In the interview she discussed her unique super autobiographical memory (only one of 12 people in the world identified with this condition). This condition is now referred to as hyperthymesia. The video segment highlighted Mary Lou's ability to recall just about any event from her life, from the exciting details of a first date to the mundane facts about the weather and what she was wearing. If you would like to see a more in depth depiction of super autobiographical memory I have posted the entire 60 minutes episode. Here they put 6 individuals, identified with a similar memory to Mary Lou, to the test.

Flashbulb Memory

Today in class we introduced the concept of flashbulb memories. Many of you shared strong emotional memories from your past that you were vividly able to recall. BUT... how accurate were they. Are you sure all the details are just as you remember. When ask to recall how the events of 9/11 unfolded for then President George Bush on 3 separate occasions he reported slightly different stories. Two of them seemed to be completely inaccurate. This led to conspiracy theories about the President's knowledge of the event and complicit in the attack. If you were a good psychologist you might not have jumped to such conclusions and understood the frailty of the human memory. Read the article as it contains the accounts of President Bush's three independent recollection of the morning on 9/11 and a complete discussion on how we do poorly on recalling specific details of our memories.

Procrastination

Since most of you identified with procrastination from the blog post on metacognition I thought I would share this video with you. This video very wittingly explains why it is that we procrastinate and what to do about it. Try out some of the suggestions and see if it helps you get things done that you always seem to put off until the last minute.
